Zona Fresca Guacamole Recipe

I love national food days (National Cheesecake Day, National Chocolate Milkshake Day, etc.) because they provide a great excuse to eat all the foods I normally feel guilty about eating.

But today is special – it’s National Guacamole Day. Finally, a day celebrating a food that’s good for you. I don’t have to feel guilty about this one!

In honor of the day, here is a recipe from one of my favorite Mexican places in Broward County – Zona Fresca. There are a lot of places to get great guac in South Florida, but Zona Fresca has one of the purest recipes in the sense that it’s almost all avocado. Here’s a chance to bring a taste of the restaurant into your own home:

Zona Fresca Guacamole

Ingredients (Serves 4-6)

4 whole ripe Hass avocados
1/4 white onion (chopped)
1 generous sprig of fresh cilantro
1/4 lime (juiced)
1 ½ teaspoon of salt


Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit and scoop out the avocado using a spoon. Place the avocado pulp into a bowl, molcajete or food processor. Add the remaining ingredients. If using a bowl, mash avocados using a potato masher. If using a molcajete, mash using the pestle. If using the food processor “pulse” the machine for a chunkier guacamole, or puree for a creamy dip.

The guacamole is great on its own with chips!

It is also a nice complement to the restaurant’s salsa.

And my personal favorite guac pairing: a steak quesadilla. The quesadilla is my favorite menu item at Zona.

If you haven’t been to Zona Fresca yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a great stop for casual dining. An order-at-the-counter-and-then-wait-for-your-food kind of place, Zona is similar to a Chipotle/Moe’s/Tijuana Flats dining experience, only it’s 100 percent local. The food is light and the ingredients are all fresh. Prices are affordable (check out the menu here).

So if you don’t have lunch or dinner plans today, National Guacamole Day is a great excuse to treat yourself to delicious, local Mexican food. Or, try the recipe!

        Great news! Please enjoy! If I can suggest my favorite, Mahi Taco on Corn Tortilla (they are better for you then the flour) with the cabbage and cilantro sauce! Also I get a mini quesadilla with light cheese and pork….sooooo good! Let me know what you like!
